Colophon
A look behind the scenes
I always enjoy learning more about other people’s personal websites and how they evolved. Since you found this page, you probably do to.
Enjoy :)
Design
The main goal for this iteration of the website was to create a minimal design that still has some personality and feels authentic to me.
My personal highlights in that regard are the variable accent colors (they change depending on the day you’re visiting this site), my signature and a custom quote at the bottom of every page and the personalized cards on /races.
During the process, I was inspired by these great designers and their websites. Pay them a visit too!
The text is set in the beautiful Newsreader typeface for main headings and uses the system-ui font for everything else.
The website switches between light and dark mode automatically based on your OS’ settings.
The accent colors are inspired by the seven colors of the rainbow.
Tech
When I started working on this version of the website, I also started dipping my toes into Golang. Naturally, I chose Hugo as the framework that powers everything. All the content is managed with Markdown files, so no CMS is needed.
The Standard.site integration is handled by the phenomenal Sequoia package by Steve.
The /now page is also being kept up to date via the ATProtocol: Books are synched directly from Bookhive, the links I collect are taken from Semble.
The art for the cards I have on /races are generated by a deterministic algorithm based on my real race data like my heart rate (parsed from the .fit file from that day).
The last played song feature is made possible by Last.fm.
Previous versions
As my ever-evolving project, this personal website went through a couple iterations already. Each one is a great throwback to what aesthetic and technologies I liked during that time:
The first version of this website was live from 2024–2026. It was built on Astro and a static snapshot is still available via v1.dominikhofer.me. You can read more about it in this post: My personal home on the internet.
Version 2 was only live in 2026 and featured a social feed-like layout. It was built with Kirby CMS and a snapshot is available as well: v2.dominikhofer.me. I also wrote a process post back then: My new personal home on the internet.
Want to stay in touch?
In a world full of algorithms, we should do it the old way.
Below, you can enter your email and I will notify you when a new post goes online. And maybe send you the occasional update that doesn’t land on this site. Very casual though, no spam ever. Pinky promise.
