I like a good old rule of thumb. Like the one I came across recently.

To quickly figure out if a certain food is an efficient source of protein, use the following formula:

Protein (g per 100 g)×10Calories (kcal per 100 g) \text{Protein (g per 100 g)} \times 10 \geq \text{Calories (kcal per 100 g)}

This means that the seitan from our local shop has a very high protein density: 22 g of protein and only 110 calories per 100 g.

On the other hand, peanut butter has 2 g more protein per 100 g (24 g in total), but also a whopping 604 calories.

That’s a difference of ~500 calories (roughly a sandwich) for the same amount of protein.
